Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe has urged residents to prepare for the October–December 2026 rains, which are forecast to bring above-normal rainfall under strengthening El Niño conditions.
Speaking at the County Headquarters, Malombe, accompanied by County Commissioner Erastus Mbui and security and meteorological officials, warned of possible flash floods, mudslides and overflowing rivers and drainage channels.
Residents in flood-prone areas were urged to remain vigilant, follow weather advisories, avoid crossing flooded roads and rivers, and relocate to safer areas where necessary.
Malombe also encouraged residents to harvest rainwater, prepare farms early and adopt soil and water conservation measures, noting that the rains could boost food production, water availability and economic activities.
He said the county has strengthened disaster preparedness through early-warning systems, drainage clearance, disease surveillance and emergency response measures.
Residents requiring emergency assistance can contact the Kitui County Emergency Line on 0702 615 888 / 0143 610 403 or Kenya Red Cross toll-free 1199.
