Kalonzo Urges International Community to Monitor IEBC Reconstitution, Demands Opposition Involvement

Wiper Party leader Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has called on the international community to keep a close watch on the ongoing reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), stressing the need for a transparent and inclusive process that guarantees electoral integrity for all Kenyans.

Speaking during a press briefing , Kalonzo emphasized that President William Ruto must adhere to the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) Report, which outlines the requirement for meaningful consultation with the Opposition in appointing new IEBC commissioners.

“The reconstitution of the IEBC is a matter of national importance and must not be handled unilaterally. The President has an obligation, as stipulated in the NADCO Report, to consult the Opposition in appointing a new, impartial electoral body,” Kalonzo stated.

He warned that bypassing the agreed framework would undermine public confidence in the electoral process and erode gains made in democratic governance.

Kalonzo also urged diplomatic partners and international election observers to pay close attention to the process, saying their involvement would help safeguard Kenya’s democracy and ensure the establishment of an independent and credible electoral commission ahead of the next general election.

“The world is watching, and so are Kenyans. We must not allow the reconstitution of the IEBC to be manipulated for political expediency. An impartial commission is the cornerstone of fair elections,” he added.

His remarks come at a time when political tensions remain high over the future composition of the IEBC, which was disbanded following the 2022 general election amid calls for reforms and greater independence.

The NADCO Report, borne out of bipartisan talks between the government and the Opposition, provides a roadmap for critical reforms, including the reconstitution of the IEBC. Opposition leaders have repeatedly expressed concern that the government may be backtracking on the agreed principles.

Dr. Kalonzo’s call has further energized demands for adherence to the NADCO framework, signaling that the Opposition will not relent in seeking a level playing field in the country’s electoral processes.
