Kibwezi West MP Hon. Mwengi Mutuse has called for the urgent reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), emphasizing the need to uphold constitutional integrity and restore representation to areas currently without elected leaders.
Speaking during an interdenominational Sunday service and fundraising event at Nandi Hills Stadium, Mutuse said the delay in reconstituting the electoral body is unjust and detrimental to the democratic rights of citizens in affected regions.
“There are six constituencies without Members of Parliament, one county without a Senator, and seven wards lacking MCAs. It is an injustice for these Kenyans to continue without representation,” he stated.
Mutuse reiterated that the process of selecting new IEBC commissioners has been thorough, consultative, and legal. He noted that it stemmed from the bipartisan NADCO (National Dialogue Committee) initiative, co-chaired by Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka and Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah. All major political parties were represented in the selection panel, including Wiper Party, represented by renowned legal expert Dr. Koki Muli.
“You cannot approbate and reprobate at the same time,” said Mutuse. “The President’s nominees were submitted by the panel and are not of his own making. The process was competitive and constitutional.”
He urged those opposed to any of the nominees to channel their objections through the parliamentary vetting process, rather than politicizing the reconstitution efforts.
Looking ahead to the next general elections, Mutuse underscored the urgency of rebuilding the IEBC well in advance. “It’s barely two years to the next election. We must prepare in good time to avoid a constitutional crisis.”
He also emphasized the role of voters in a democracy, reminding leaders that elections are decided by the electorate — not the IEBC or the government. “IEBC is only a referee. Let leaders remember that it is the people who vote and choose.”
Mutuse concluded with a rallying call for unity and support towards strengthening the electoral body: “Let us all work together to strengthen, not weaken, the IEBC.”
The MP was accompanied by several notable leaders, including Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah, Farouk Kibet, Silvanus Osoro, Japheth Nyakundi, Didmus Barasa, Mark Nyamita, Fred Ikana, and area MP Bernard Kitur, among others.
