Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. Vows to Tackle Devolution Challenges During Madaraka Day Celebrations

Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. delivered a firm and inspiring message during this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations, pledging to address the pressing challenges facing devolution in the country. Speaking at AIC Mukuyuni Primary School in Kaiti Subcounty, the governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening county governance and service delivery.

“We will confront the challenges of devolution head-on,” Governor Mutula declared, drawing applause from local leaders, residents, and dignitaries gathered to mark Kenya’s 62nd year of self-rule.

The governor emphasized that despite the progress made since the advent of devolved governance, counties like Makueni continue to grapple with funding constraints, policy gaps, and service delivery inefficiencies. However, he remained optimistic, stating that his administration is not only aware of these issues but is prepared to implement bold reforms to ensure devolution works for every citizen.

“As a county, we must rise above politics and focus on development. Our people deserve efficient healthcare, clean water, quality education, and a government that listens,” said the governor.

He also used the occasion to call for stronger intergovernmental cooperation between county and national governments, arguing that the success of devolution hinges on mutual respect, timely disbursement of funds, and capacity building at the grassroots level.

Governor Mutula’s remarks came as Makueni County showcased its recent milestones in healthcare, infrastructure, and youth empowerment. Residents at the event expressed appreciation for ongoing projects, including road upgrades and digital access programs, which have begun transforming rural communities.

This year’s Madaraka Day theme centered on the role of citizens in safeguarding Kenya’s democratic gains and holding leaders accountable a message that resonated with the governor’s own call to action.

“As we celebrate our freedom and democracy, let us also reflect on our responsibility to build a stronger, more united Kenya from the counties up,” he concluded.

Governor Mutula’s speech sets the tone for what is expected to be a renewed push for effective, transparent, and people-centered governance in Makueni and beyond.
