Over 1,100 Kitui Youth to Benefit from Six-Month Jobs Program Focused on Environment and Development

Kitui County Commissioner Kipchumba Rutto has officially announced the return of the Kazi Mtaani program, a government initiative aimed at tackling youth unemployment while promoting urban development and environmental conservation. Speaking at his office during a press briefing, Commissioner Rutto confirmed that the revamped program will run for six months and is set to benefit over 1,114 youth from Kitui County.

“This is not just a job opportunity—it’s a chance for our youth to be at the forefront of urban transformation and environmental care,” said Rutto.

Targeting Youth and Inclusivity

The program is open to youth aged between 18 and 35 years, who are encouraged to apply by the end of the week. Special provisions have been made to ensure inclusivity, with persons with disabilities being given equal opportunities to apply through an online platform. The application process is designed to be simple and accessible to all eligible individuals.Over 1,100 Kitui Youth to Benefit from Six-Month Jobs Program Focused on Environment and Development

Structured Shifts and Key Focus Areas

Selected youth will work in organized shifts and will be deployed to key focus areas, including:

Urban infrastructure and road maintenance

Tree planting and environmental cleanup

Projects that enhance climate resilience and environmental protection

Commissioner Rutto emphasized the program’s dual role in creating employment and fostering sustainable urban development. “Through this program, our young people will not only earn a living but also help make Kitui cleaner, greener, and more resilient to climate challenges,” he noted.

Gender Balance and Safety Measures

The program has been designed to promote gender balance, ensuring equal participation of both young men and women. To enhance safety at work, Rutto urged all participants to register with the Social Health Authority (SHA). This will ensure that in the event of any work-related injuries, participants will receive first aid and medical care through SHA support.

“We want to protect our youth as they serve the community. By being active members of SHA, they can access immediate care in case of any injuries,” Rutto stated.

Lasting Impact

With a focus on urban infrastructure, climate action, and community well-being, the Kazi Mtaani program is expected to bring lasting impact not just to the youth but to the wider Kitui community. It aims to inspire a sense of responsibility and civic pride among participants, while also addressing pressing environmental issues.

Commissioner Rutto concluded by encouraging all eligible youth to take advantage of the opportunity:

“This is your time to step up, serve your county, and build your future.”
