Under the steadfast leadership of Makueni County Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr., a new chapter of hope is unfolding for thousands of residents in Makueni, as efforts to restore the long-dormant Nolturesh water supply gain momentum.
In a significant milestone for the region, a high-level multi-stakeholder meeting was convened in Nairobi on Wednesday, bringing together key players in the water sector to strategize on the urgent rehabilitation of the Nolturesh water pipeline. The consultative forum, chaired by Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB) Acting CEO Richard Cheruiyot, marks a decisive step forward one deeply rooted in the commitment and advocacy spearheaded by Governor Kilonzo Jr.
Representing Makueni County at the meeting, Water Chief Officer David Makau articulated the county’s unwavering support for a sustainable, long-term solution to the water crisis, echoing Governor Mutula’s call for accountability, innovation, and protection of critical infrastructure.
“This renewed momentum is a direct result of Governor Mutula’s continued push for practical water solutions for Makueni people,” said Makau. “We are now on a promising path toward actual delivery.”
Among the key resolutions made during the meeting:
Comprehensive metering of all pipeline connections to curb rampant wastage, particularly among users currently operating under a flat-rate system.
Dismantling of illegal water cartels and enhanced regulation to restore integrity to the distribution network.
Licensing of Nolturesh Water Company as a bulk water service provider, enabling broader integration of water resources across counties.
Deployment of the Critical Infrastructure Police Unit to secure the main pipeline and deter vandalism and unauthorized access.
A major highlight of the discussion was the proposed rehabilitation assessment survey by Konza Technopolis, one of the major consumers along the pipeline. The survey recommends adoption of smart technologies to enhance system efficiency and reduce operational losses. Governor Mutula’s administration has fully backed this initiative, seeing it as a vital component of Makueni’s long-term water resilience strategy.
“The Governor has shown vision and courage in pushing for water justice,” said a stakeholder who attended the meeting. “His leadership has elevated the issue from a local crisis to a national priority.”
A follow-up meeting is slated for June 19, during which the Konza Technopolis Development Authority (KoTDA) will present its detailed analysis of the rehabilitation survey and propose an implementation roadmap.
As the process advances, optimism is growing among residents in water-stressed areas such as Emali and Kilome communities that have for years borne the brunt of unreliable supply. With the Nolturesh system once a vital lifeline, its revival now appears not just possible, but imminent thanks in no small part to the visionary leadership of Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr.
