ODM Nominated Senator Beth Syengo Heckled by Residents During Public Event in Kitui

Tension briefly marred a well-attended public event in Yatta Kwa Vonza Ward, Kitui Rural, after ODM-nominated Senator Beth Syengo was heckled and shouted down by a section of angry residents.

The incident occurred during the thanksgiving ceremony and midterm development report presentation hosted by area MCA Mark Kitute Nding’o at his home in Mamole Village. The event also marked the official launch of the Mark Kitute Nding’o Foundation, a charitable initiative aimed at supporting bright but needy learners in the ward.

Senator Syengo, who hails from Kitui County, had taken to the podium to address the crowd and express her appreciation for the development work undertaken by the MCA. However, her mention of ODM party leader Raila Odinga and her own nomination through the party sparked an unexpected backlash.

A section of the crowd began booing loudly, disrupting her speech and rejecting any further mention of national political figures. Despite her efforts to plead for calm and appeal to the audience to give her a chance to speak, the residents remained defiant and unyielding.

“I was nominated by Raila Odinga, and I stand here to thank him for giving Kitui a voice in the Senate,” she said remarks that were met with increased jeers and chants from the crowd. Attempts to continue her address, including her declaration that she would vie for the Kitui County Woman Representative seat in 2027, were also drowned out.

Security and event organizers were forced to intervene, and the senator eventually cut her speech short, allowing the event to proceed with the remaining speakers.

The disruption stood in stark contrast to the otherwise peaceful and well-organized ceremony, which was graced by several leaders, including Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe and Kitui Central MP Dr. Makali Mulu. Both praised the developmental strides made by MCA Kitute and commended the launch of his foundation as a noble and timely initiative.

The incident highlights rising local political sensitivities as Kitui gears up for the 2027 general elections, with residents appearing increasingly vocal about their expectations and frustrations with both local and national leaders.
