The people of Machakos are sounding a stern warning to Senator Agnes Kavindu, accusing her of abandoning her core mandate and instead seeking cheap political sympathy by politicizing the ongoing challenges facing health facilities in the county.
Residents and health stakeholders have strongly condemned the senator’s recent attempts to score political mileage over health sector issues, saying that her public outbursts are nothing more than a cover-up for her dismal performance and lack of action since taking office.
“This is not the time for empty rhetoric. We elected a senator to provide oversight not to run around the county looking for sympathy,” said one angry resident in Machakos town. “She has been sleeping on the job and now she wants to use the health crisis to revive her faded political fortunes.”
Sources within the health administration described Kavindu’s remarks as “misleading and opportunistic,” noting that health remains a devolved function entirely under the county government. The senator, they said, should focus on using her national platform to push for more resources in the Senate rather than attacking county officers in public rallies.
Several civil society groups also joined the growing chorus of criticism, calling out Senator Kavindu’s failure to raise any substantive motion in the Senate that addresses the specific health challenges facing Machakos.
“Instead of performing serious oversight and proposing laws to strengthen healthcare systems, the senator has chosen the easy route of sensationalizing the situation on the ground,” one civil society representative noted. “Machakos residents are tired of elected leaders who hide behind excuses and political sympathy whenever they are challenged.”
They further pointed out that Governor Wavinya Ndeti has already engaged health unions and is working round the clock to resolve the nurses’ strike and improve service delivery across the county’s health facilities a proactive effort that the senator has failed to support in any meaningful way.
Residents are now urging Senator Kavindu to stop politicking and finally roll up her sleeves to do the actual work she was elected to do.
“The health of Machakos people should not be used as a campaign tool,” said another resident in Tala. “If she cannot deliver, then she should step aside. We refuse to be drawn into sympathy politics.”
As the criticism grows louder, one thing is clear: the people of Machakos will no longer tolerate a senator who prefers microphones over meaningful action.
