Governor Mutula Commits to Stronger Church-County Partnership as Bishop Kamomoe Takes Office in Wote

Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. on Saturday pledged deeper collaboration between the County Government and the Catholic Church following the appointment of Simon Peter Kamomoe as Auxiliary Bishop of the Wote Catholic Diocese.

Governor Mutula, who was accompanied by First Lady Anita Mutula during the colorful ceremony, welcomed Bishop Kamomoe’s appointment, terming it a blessing not only to the church but also to the people of Makueni. He emphasized that faith-based institutions, particularly schools and hospitals run by the church, play a central role in service delivery and community empowerment.

“We are committed to walk hand in hand with the church. Together, we can strengthen education, improve health care, and build a society rooted in integrity and compassion,” said Mutula, adding that his administration values the church as a strong partner in grassroots development.

The governor also paid tribute to Bishop Paul Kariuki Njiru, who has been unwell, praising his steadfast service and pastoral commitment. “Bishop Kariuki has been a pillar of faith and leadership in Makueni. His absence has been deeply felt, and we continue to pray for his recovery,” Mutula remarked.

The event, presided over by Archbishop Philip Anyolo of the Nairobi Archdiocese, drew clergy, faithful, and leaders from across the region. Archbishop Anyolo lauded Governor Mutula’s leadership, noting that Makueni continues to stand out nationally as one of the least corrupt counties in Kenya. He said the governor’s administration has created an enabling environment where faith-based institutions thrive.

Bishop Norman Wambua of Machakos Diocese called on Bishop Kamomoe to use his new mandate to reinforce the church’s role in nurturing families, fostering peace, and strengthening the moral fabric of society.

With Bishop Kamomoe now officially taking office to support Bishop Kariuki, Governor Mutula assured the faithful that his government will not only support but also partner with the diocese in initiatives that touch directly on the lives of the people.

“The progress of our county is anchored on shared values. When church and government walk together, the people of Makueni are the greatest beneficiaries,” the governor said, receiving a warm applause from the congregation.
