The political storm at the Kitui County Assembly has intensified, with a section of Members of County Assembly (MCAs) vowing to remove embattled Speaker Kevin Kinengo Katisya from office, accusing him of incompetence, abuse of office, and undermining the business of the House.
Speaking during a press briefing, Matinyani Ward MCA Silvester Kitheka, popularly known as Yamu, declared that Speaker Kinengo’s days in office are numbered. He dismissed any perception that the assembly was targeting Kinengo as an individual, stressing that the impeachment push is solely about ending what he termed as Kinengo’s “incompetent and dictatorial leadership.”
“We are not impeaching Kinengo the person, we are impeaching the incompetent and embattled Speaker who has failed in his mandate. Kinengo must go home,” Yamu said firmly.
Kyuso Ward MCA Munyoki Mwinzi echoed the sentiments, alleging that since 2023, the Speaker has been frustrating the smooth running of the assembly. “Kinengo has consistently sabotaged assembly business. He is not fit to continue leading this House, and it is high time he goes home,” Mwinzi declared.
On his part, Chuluni Ward MCA Mathew Vuthi accused Kinengo of attempting to manipulate recruitment processes at the assembly to favor unqualified candidates. “After the last interviews, Kinengo wanted to bring in incompetent people to the County Assembly. We will not allow such impunity,” Vuthi said.
The MCAs further claimed that Kinengo has been hiding behind his alleged close ties with President William Ruto, projecting himself as untouchable. They also accused him of attempting to compromise oversight bodies like the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) using his financial muscle.
“Kinengo boasts that no one can touch him because of his relationship with the President. He even claims that if it is EACC, they only need money and he has plenty to dish out. That arrogance has no place in Kitui,” Yamu added.
The mounting pressure now places Speaker Kinengo in a tight corner as MCAs rally to formalize impeachment proceedings. If successful, the move could mark a dramatic shift in the leadership of the Kitui County Assembly.
