Kitui Donkey Owners CBO Declare War on Illegal Slaughter, Urge Governor Malombe to Act

The Kitui Owners Donkey Community-Based Organisation (CBO) has raised concerns over the increasing cases of donkey trafficking and slaughter within the county.

Speaking after the arrest of two suspects who were caught transporting 28 donkeys illegally at Kanyoonyoo in Kitui Rural, the group expressed outrage, noting that donkey owners are bitter over the rampant threats facing the animals.

Jofridah Temea Mwendwa, the chairlady of the organisation, said members have been uniting across different parts of the county to champion the rights of donkeys.
“We do not want to see any further slaughtering of donkeys. They are a source of livelihood and must be protected,” she stressed.

Her sentiments were echoed by the CBO’s secretary, Jackson Kimanzi, who called on political leaders to actively support the fight against donkey trade.
“We are asking our leaders to stand firm and fight for the donkey. These animals are a lifeline for many families and their welfare must be safeguarded,” he said.

The group has formally appealed to Kitui Governor Dr Julius Malombe to intervene and put in place measures that will protect the animals from illegal trade.

Donkeys remain a vital resource for transport and small-scale farming in Kitui, and their protection has become a pressing issue for many rural households.
