The County Government of Kitui, under the leadership of Governor Dr. Julius Malombe, has reaffirmed its strong partnership with the national government in implementing transformative projects aimed at uplifting the region’s socio-economic status.
Speaking during the launch of the Katheka Security Lighting Project in Kitui West, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Waziri Fredrick Kimanga, who represented the county government, said the collaboration reflects Governor Malombe’s vision of a prosperous, well-planned, and economically vibrant Kitui.
The event, graced by Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira, showcased ongoing cooperation between the two levels of government, particularly in the areas of housing, infrastructure, and energy access.
“Kitui County is committed to providing the necessary land for these key projects, while the national government will continue to support us through financing and technical expertise,” said Kimanga. “This partnership will ensure residents benefit from quality housing, reliable power, and modern market infrastructure.”
Among the flagship projects under this collaboration are the construction of housing units in Manyenyoni and at the Gemology Lab site in Mwingi. Additionally, the development of new and modernized markets is underway, including the Kalundu Metropolitan Market, the ESP Market behind KIMWASCO offices in Mwingi, the Migwani Market, and the completion of the Kithomboani Modern Market.
Other priority initiatives include the Kabati and Tulia markets, alongside the construction of student hostels at the KMTC campuses in Mutomo and Mwingi, and at the Kabati Vocational Training Centre (VTC).
In the energy sector, Kitui County, in partnership with the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC), is undertaking several key electrification and maximization projects. These include Kiasa Maximization in Kitui Central, Kweluu Market/Catholic Maximization in Mwingi West, Mangelu–Kwa Kioko–Matinga Shopping Centers in Kitui West, Mwangeni–Ngomano–Kandong’o Primary School in Kitui East, and Kamakumbi Maximization in Mwingi North.
As the county gears up for the Mashujaa Day celebrations on October 20, 2025, to be held at the newly completed 10,000-seater Ithookwe Stadium, both the national and county governments are fast-tracking various infrastructure developments. These include the renovation of the Kitui Airstrip, the construction of a new State Lodge, and the upgrading of urban roads with modern drainage systems and streetlights.
The ceremony was attended by Kitui West MP Edith Nyenze, County Commissioner Ben Muasya, REREC CEO Dr. Rose Mkalama, Kitui County Energy Chief Officer Henry Nyamai, and senior government officials from both the national and county administrations.
Waziri Kimanga reaffirmed the county’s unwavering commitment to working closely with the national government to deliver meaningful and inclusive development, ensuring that no part of Kitui is left behind.
“Under Governor Dr. Malombe’s leadership, we are building a stronger, connected, and more resilient Kitui for generations to come,” he emphasized.
