Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to eradicating malnutrition, launching a series of transformative health and nutrition programs aimed at protecting mothers, children, and vulnerable families across the county.
Speaking during the flagging-off of critical medical and nutrition equipment at the Kambi Mawe Maternity Block on Tuesday, Governor Mutula underscored nutrition as a cornerstone of Makueni’s human capital development agenda. He emphasized that good nutrition is not merely a health issue but a foundation for economic productivity and a brighter future for generations to come.
“A healthy and well-nourished population is the foundation of development. My administration is determined to make sure every child, mother, and family in Makueni has access to adequate nutrition and quality healthcare,” said Mutula.
The Governor, accompanied by Eni Kenya’s Managing Director Daniella Morra, flagged off newly procured medical equipment for the maternity block, as well as a modern ablution block and septic tank marking a major step in improving maternal and child healthcare infrastructure.
In a further boost to the county’s health system, the Governor launched specialized Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) equipment at the Mother and Child Hospital, a milestone expected to significantly enhance the survival rate of newborns with complications.
At the Blood Satellite Center, Governor Mutula also commissioned a blood plasma deep freezer and a refrigerated centrifuge machine key tools that will improve the county’s capacity for blood storage and separation, enabling better management of medical emergencies and chronic conditions.
The Governor noted that these advancements are part of a wider partnership between the County Government of Makueni and development organizations including Eni Kenya, Helen Keller International, and Vitamin Angels. The partnership focuses on sustainable, community-driven interventions to combat moderate acute malnutrition.
As part of the broader initiative, the county has also begun distributing fortified blended flour to children, expectant and lactating mothers, and adults suffering from malnutrition a move Governor Mutula said symbolizes his administration’s holistic approach to food and nutrition security.
“We are building a healthy generation through deliberate investments in nutrition and preventive healthcare. No family in Makueni should suffer from hunger or malnutrition,” he added.
Through these concerted efforts, Makueni continues to position itself as a model county in the fight against malnutrition championing innovation, inclusivity, and strong partnerships under the visionary leadership of Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr.
