Dr Augustus Muli Calls for United Effort to Strengthen Grassroots Economies

Business leader and politician Dr Augustus Muli has underscored the need for a development model that places local communities at the heart of Kenya’s economic growth, arguing that meaningful progress must begin from the grassroots and not boardrooms alone.

While addressing business operators and transport sector players during a forum held in Kitui Town, Dr Muli noted that national development targets would remain out of reach unless leaders and investors intentionally support small enterprises and informal sector players who form the backbone of the economy. He maintained that economic success should be measured by the improved welfare of citizens at the local level.

Dr Muli, who leads the NLP Party and is the founder of Kyalo Kya Maendeleo, told the gathering that political debates should not overshadow practical solutions to unemployment and limited income opportunities. He said leaders must prioritise policies and investments that directly translate into jobs, skills development, and sustainable sources of income for ordinary Kenyans.

He further observed that global economic comparisons often made by national leaders would only be meaningful if inclusive strategies were adopted, stressing that empowering local traders, youth, and women is essential for building a competitive economy.

As part of his broader empowerment agenda, Dr Muli announced plans to revive the third phase of the Kyalo Kya Maendeleo Women Modern Basketry Project. He explained that the programme is designed to link women producers with international markets, enabling them to earn a steady income. According to him, earlier phases of the initiative saw beneficiaries take home up to KSh 4,500 weekly, helping to stabilise family livelihoods.

The engagement took place shortly after the launch of The Woods Restaurant, Bar and Grill, a modern hospitality establishment located along the Kitui–Kibwezi Highway near Kaveta Roundabout. Dr Muli said the facility reflects his belief that strategic private investments can stimulate local economies when they are integrated with community empowerment efforts.

He concluded by reiterating that collaboration between leaders, investors, and communities is key to transforming local economies and, ultimately, driving sustainable national growth.
