The solemn Mass, currently underway, brought together religious leaders, political figures and residents who gathered to pay their last respects to the patriarch, who was the father of Joseph Mwongela, the Catholic Bishop of Kitui and Coadjutor Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Machakos.
The requiem Mass is being presided over by Anthony Muheria, the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nyeri, who is leading the faithful in prayers and reflections in honour of the late Mzee Mbunzi.
Leaders present described the late Mzee Mbunzi as a respected elder, devoted family man and a pillar in both the church and community. Residents of Kakumi and the larger Matinyani area have turned up in large numbers in a show of solidarity with Bishop Mwongela and his family during this moment of mourning.
