The Judiciary has gazetted the establishment of 15 additional Small Claims Courts across the country and announced the creation of two new Court of Appeal stations in Kakamega and Meru, in a move aimed at expanding access to justice and bringing court services closer to the public.
According to a gazette notice, the new courts are expected to begin operations next month.
Small Claims Courts handle civil disputes involving relatively low monetary values and are designed to resolve cases quickly through simplified procedures. The expansion is expected to ease the backlog in magistrates’ courts while providing individuals and small businesses with a faster and more affordable avenue to settle disputes.
The Judiciary noted that the additional courts will significantly enhance the efficiency of the justice system by ensuring that minor civil matters are resolved promptly.
At the same time, the establishment of Court of Appeal stations in Kakamega and Meru will strengthen the appellate court’s presence in the Western and Eastern regions. The new stations are expected to reduce the need for litigants to travel long distances to access appellate services.
The Court of Appeal in Kakamega will operate at the Kakamega Law Courts, while the Meru Court of Appeal station will be based at Nkubu Law Courts.
Judiciary officials say the move forms part of ongoing reforms aimed at decentralizing judicial services and improving the delivery of justice across the country.
Both appellate court stations are scheduled to begin operations next month.
