Residents of Mwingi West are set to benefit from improved access to clean and reliable water following the commissioning of the Tyaa–Wimbondo–Wikithuki Sump Well project by Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe on Friday, March 27, 2026.
The Kshs. 13.1 million project, a flagship initiative under Governor Malombe’s administration, is already operational and is supplying clean water to over 200 households in Wimbondo area, as well as learners and staff at Wimbondo Primary School. Plans are underway to extend the water supply to neighboring Wikithuki, further broadening its impact.
Governor Malombe underscored his administration’s unwavering commitment to addressing water scarcity across Kitui County, noting that access to clean water remains a key pillar in improving livelihoods and driving socio-economic development at the grassroots. He emphasized that the adoption of solar-powered systems not only ensures sustainability but also reduces operational costs, making such projects more reliable for rural communities.
“This project reflects our deliberate efforts to invest in sustainable solutions that directly transform the lives of our people,” said the Governor, adding that his government will continue prioritizing water infrastructure to ease the burden on residents, particularly women and children who often travel long distances in search of water.
The project is part of a broader county strategy aimed at expanding water access and enhancing resilience in arid and semi-arid areas through innovative and environmentally friendly technologies.
The commissioning ceremony was attended by area MCA Anthony Musyoka, Nominated MCA Jacinta Mwoni, County Ministers Peter Nkunda, Dr. Stephen Mbaya, Eng. Reuben Itiko, Richard Mwendandu, and Chief Officers Nathan Vungo, Stephen Salee, and Michael Kalii, all of whom lauded Governor Malombe’s leadership in accelerating development across the county.
The Tyaa–Wimbondo–Wikithuki Sump Well now stands as a testament to Governor Malombe’s focused development agenda, bringing hope and tangible change to the people of Mwingi West.
