Former Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of East African Community, Arid and Semi-Arid Lands and Regional Development, Penninah Malonza, has issued a strong call for accountability among political aspirants, urging leaders to prioritize service delivery over rhetoric as the country approaches the next electoral cycle.
Speaking during a grassroots engagement forum held at Kitui High School in Kitui Central, Malonza challenged aspiring leaders to reflect on their track records before seeking elective positions. She emphasized that leadership should be earned through demonstrated service to the people rather than empty promises.
“Before asking wananchi for votes, every aspirant must clearly account for what they have done for the people,” Malonza stated, drawing applause from attendees. “Leadership is a responsibility, not an entitlement.”
The former CS also took a firm stand against the rising trend of political intolerance and violence, cautioning leaders against engaging in what she termed as “politics of goonism.” She warned that such behavior undermines democracy and threatens the unity and stability of communities.
Malonza urged politicians across the political divide to embrace issue-based campaigns and maintain decorum during the campaign period. “We must reject violence and intimidation in our politics. Let us engage peacefully, respect one another, and focus on ideas that will uplift our people,” she added.
The grassroots meeting brought together a wide range of aspiring local leaders, providing a platform for dialogue and reflection on leadership values at the community level. Malonza’s remarks resonated strongly with participants, many of whom acknowledged the need for a shift toward more responsible and people-centered leadership.
Her message comes at a time when political activity is gradually intensifying across the country, with early campaigns beginning to take shape. Observers note that her emphasis on accountability and peaceful engagement could play a key role in shaping the tone of upcoming political contests in Kitui County and beyond.
