A storm of anger is sweeping across Kitui County as leaders and residents demand immediate action over the continued invasion of farms by camel herders, barely a day after a painful burial of seven locals. In a strongly worded statement, Kitui Woman Representative Dr. Irene Kasalu has issued a no-nonsense ultimatum to Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale enough is enough.
“Not even 24 hours have passed since we laid seven of our people to rest, yet camels are already back grazing on our farms,” she declared, her tone reflecting the deep frustration and grief of a community pushed to the edge.
Dr. Kasalu did not mince her words. She accused the national leadership of ignoring the suffering of Kitui residents and tolerating a situation that continues to disrupt livelihoods and threaten peace. According to her, patience has run out.
“We have maintained peace for far too long under extreme provocation. But let it be clear that restraint should never be mistaken for weakness,” she warned.
The Woman Representative emphasized that Kitui is a farming region, not a grazing corridor for camels. She defended the identity and economic backbone of her people, drawing a sharp line between acceptable and imposed practices.
“As you rightly said, we are farmers. We keep goats, cows, and dogs not camels. Our land is not a pasture for outsiders. Our land, our peace, our right must be respected,” she asserted.
Her remarks come amid rising tensions following repeated incidents involving camel herders, which local leaders say have led to loss of lives, destruction of crops, and growing insecurity. The timing so soon after a mass burial has only intensified public outrage.
Dr. Kasalu’s message to CS Duale and those linked to the herders was direct and uncompromising: remove the camels from Kitui County immediately or face the full political and social consequences of continued inaction.
“This is no longer a request. It is a demand from a people who have suffered enough.”
As pressure mounts, all eyes now turn to the national government and Aden Duale to see whether decisive action will be taken or whether Kitui’s cries will once again go unanswered.
