Machakos County reinforced its position as a champion of inclusive trade reforms by hosting a public participation forum on the proposed National Hawkers Protection Law. The session was attended by the National Assembly Trade, Industry and Cooperatives Committee, led by Robert Gichimu, alongside Joyce Kamene Kasimbi and local traders.
Governor Wavinya Ndeti emphasized the need to safeguard hawkers, describing them as key drivers of the grassroots economy. She reiterated her administration’s commitment to creating structured trading spaces, fair licensing systems, and protection from harassment and unlawful evictions.
The proposed law aims to formalize and protect small scale traders by ensuring access to designated spaces and affordable permits while promoting order within the informal sector.
Leaders present commended Machakos for its proactive engagement, noting that views collected will help shape a more responsive and inclusive legal framework. Traders expressed optimism that the legislation will deliver stability and dignity in their day to day operations.
Governor Ndeti’s leadership continues to position Machakos as a model county in advancing policies that empower small businesses and strengthen livelihoods.
