Kitui Green Run Half-Marathon Launched to Champion Water Access and Environmental Conservation

The inaugural Kitui Green Run Half-Marathon themed “Run for Rain” has officially been launched ahead of the highly anticipated event set for May 30th and 31st, 2026 at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui town.

Speaking with Lower Eastern Digital Media, Kitui County CECM for Culture, Sports, Youth Affairs, ICT and Social Services Phoebe Mutemi said the marathon is aimed at promoting environmental conservation and supporting water accessibility projects across Kitui County.

The two-day event, organized by Green Africa Group in collaboration with Athletics Kenya and the County Government of Kitui, will feature a 21-kilometre elite race, 10-kilometre corporate category, 5-kilometre youth and schools race, and a 2-kilometre children’s race.

Mutemi noted that the initiative complements ongoing efforts by Governor Julius Malombe’s administration in addressing water scarcity through construction of sand dams and other water projects.

Run chair Julia Kalkwe urged residents, schools and institutions to register and participate in large numbers, saying the marathon seeks to transform lives through sustainable water solutions and environmental conservation.

Organizers expressed confidence that the event will attract athletes and participants from across the country, positioning Kitui as an emerging destination for sports tourism and environmental advocacy.
