Kitui County Woman Representative Dr. Irene Kasalu has come out strongly against Hannah Cheptumo, President William Ruto’s nominee for the Gender docket, terming her “incompetent and unfit” for the role.
Speaking during public gatherings, Dr. Kasalu sharply criticized Cheptumo’s performance during her recent vetting session, particularly her response to the rampant femicide crisis that has rocked the country in recent months.
“The nominee had a very difficult time articulating a clear and firm position on the issue of femicide,” Kasalu said. “At a time when women are being murdered in horrifying numbers, we cannot afford to have a leader who cannot speak boldly and act decisively on gender-based violence.”
Kasalu, a vocal advocate for women’s rights and gender equity, questioned Cheptumo’s preparedness and track record, noting that she failed to inspire confidence in her ability to lead such a critical ministry.
“She lacked depth, clarity, and urgency. Her responses during the interview were evasive and showed a shocking disconnect from the lived realities of Kenyan women. If this is the best nominee we can find, then we are truly failing the women of this nation,” she added.
Dr. Kasalu went further to declare her firm stance when Cheptumo’s name is presented before the National Assembly for approval.
“When her name comes to the floor, I will vote No. I urge my fellow legislators, especially women, to stand on principle. This is not about politics it is about the lives and safety of women and girls across Kenya.”
The vetting of President Ruto’s cabinet nominees has sparked national debate, with many civil society groups also questioning the suitability of certain individuals. The Gender docket, in particular, has drawn heightened attention due to the escalating violence against women and the push for stronger policy interventions
Dr. Kasalu’s remarks are expected to intensify scrutiny on Cheptumo’s nomination, as public pressure mounts for more accountable and impactful leadership in the Ministry of Gender.
