Pigeon peas a game-changer in the fight against famine in Lower Eastern region. The drought-resistant crop matures relatively quickly and can thrive with little rainfall, making it ideal for the region’s changing climate.
For years, farmers have relied on traditional seeds that take longer to mature, exposing them to losses when rains fail. ICRISAT is helping bridge this gap by promoting improved pigeon pea varieties that mature faster and offer resistance to drought and certain diseases.
Beyond fighting hunger, pigeon peas provide a double benefit: farmers earn money from sales while improving their families’ nutrition.
Wider adoption of improved seeds will strengthen food security and boost household incomes across Lower Eastern.
