Makueni County has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Women Engaged for Development (WED) to strengthen maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health services, in a partnership aimed at reducing preventable deaths and improving access to quality healthcare across the county.
The agreement establishes a framework for collaboration between the county government and WED to address key health challenges affecting women, children and adolescents, while strengthening healthcare systems and promoting better health outcomes.
The partnership seeks to eliminate preventable maternal deaths, reduce maternal, neonatal, child and adolescent mortality, and accelerate efforts to end adolescent pregnancies. It also aims to improve the quality of healthcare services and promote the overall well-being of mothers and children through strengthened policies, sustainable financing and effective implementation of proven health interventions.
Under the agreement, the collaboration will focus on three key areas aimed at improving the delivery of Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health and Nutrition (MNCAH+N) services.
These include increasing the availability and quality of domestic funding for priority maternal and child health programmes at both national and sub-national levels, promoting the adoption of policies that support the expansion of proven and cost effective healthcare interventions, and strengthening the implementation of policies that prioritise the health needs of women and children.
The partnership is expected to contribute to more coordinated efforts in addressing healthcare gaps, improving service delivery and ensuring that essential health interventions reach those who need them most.
The WED delegation, led by Prof. Anne Kihara, reaffirmed the importance of partnerships in advancing health outcomes, emphasising the need for coordinated action to ensure that women, children and adolescents can access quality and affordable healthcare services.
Speaking during the signing of the agreement, Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. emphasised that healthcare remains a key priority for county governments, noting that investments and interventions in the sector must translate into meaningful improvements in the lives of citizens.
He underscored the importance of collaboration among government institutions and development partners, observing that sustainable improvements in health outcomes depend on stakeholders working together to address existing challenges and strengthen healthcare delivery systems.
The agreement reinforces Makueni County’s efforts to improve healthcare services through strategic partnerships, policy support and better resource mobilisation, with a focus on ensuring that mothers, newborns, children and adolescents receive the care they need.
Through the collaboration with WED, the county aims to advance its maternal and child health agenda while supporting broader efforts to reduce preventable deaths, improve the quality of care and build a stronger, more responsive healthcare system for residents.
