Makueni County stands on the brink of major economic transformation following renewed momentum around the proposed Nairobi-Mombasa Expressway, a mega infrastructure project valued at KSh 455 billion.
The ambitious 444-kilometre highway, which is set to span 110 kilometres across Makueni, firmly places the county at the centre of the development’s anticipated economic surge. Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr has welcomed the project, calling it a “catalyst for regional growth and prosperity.”
“This expressway is not just a road it’s a lifeline for our people and businesses. Makueni is ready to harness the full potential of this investment,” deputy Governor Lucy said in a statement.
Once complete, the expressway will reduce travel time between Nairobi and Mombasa to just five hours, improving mobility, road safety, and economic linkage between the two major cities. Experts say this will open up vast opportunities for trade, tourism, and local investment along the corridor.
The project blueprint, presented by Evergreen Capital’s Kyle McCarter during a courtesy call to Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili, includes the creation of three new cities along the route, along with 12 highway exits, eight rest areas, and three designated wildlife crossings.
Construction is scheduled to take four years, with robust stakeholder engagement set to play a central role in its success. Lucy emphasized the importance of inclusive planning, noting that consultations with county governments, landowners, and affected communities will ensure fair compensation and a smooth rollout.
“This is a moment for Makueni to rise. Our people must be at the heart of this development,” concluded.
The expressway marks a major milestone in Kenya’s infrastructure evolution one in which Makueni, under Governor Mutula’s leadership, is poised to lead from the front.
