Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. on Wednesday launched a series of transformative water infrastructure projects aimed at significantly improving clean water access in Wote Town and its surrounding areas. The initiatives are part of a sustained effort to address water scarcity and support the town’s growing population and economic prospects.
Speaking during the launch event, Governor Mutula accompanied by Tanathi Water Works Development Agency CEO Fidelis Kyengo hailed the projects as a major milestone in the county’s water agenda, crediting a strong partnership with the national agency for the progress achieved.
The projects, fully funded by Tanathi Water Works in collaboration with the County Government of Makueni, include:
Equipping a high-capacity borehole at Mwaani capable of delivering 30,000 litres of water per hour, integrated with a 12.5 KW solar power system;
Installation of a 10 KW solar power unit to solarize the Kamunyolo community water supply system;
Deployment of an 88 KW solar system to support booster pumping to the Makueni Boys High School distribution tanks;
Construction and rehabilitation of a 13.5-kilometre water distribution pipeline;
Supply and installation of bulk water meters to enhance efficiency and accountability.
The Governor emphasized that the new infrastructure would bring immediate benefits to local residents. Notably, the solarized Mwaani borehole is expected to inject a steady supply of 30,000 litres per hour into the water network. At Kamunyolo, daily water pumping capacity will jump from a meagre 45 minutes a day to an impressive 7 hours thanks to the solar upgrade.
“These interventions are not just about infrastructure they’re about dignity, health, and development,” said Governor Mutula. “Our administration is working round the clock to ensure that Wote Town has a sustainable and reliable clean water supply to match its fast-growing urban population. This is also key to attracting and retaining investors.”
The Governor reiterated his government’s commitment to climate-smart solutions, noting the integration of solar energy in all the major systems as a strategic move to reduce operational costs and ensure long-term sustainability.
With these projects now underway, thousands of households and institutions in Wote are set to experience more stable and equitable access to clean water marking a significant leap forward in Makueni’s development agenda.
