A mother is making a heartfelt appeal to Kenyans of goodwill to help her raise funds for her seven-year-old daughter, Michelle Mwai Mulatya, who urgently needs life-saving open-heart surgery in India.
Michelle, a young, bright-eyed girl, was born with a complex congenital heart condition known as Perimembranous Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD). From birth, she has battled repeated respiratory infections, and her condition has since worsened. A recent diagnosis from The Nairobi West Hospital confirmed that Michelle now suffers from multiple severe cardiac complications, including severe mitral and aortic valve regurgitation, left ventricular dilation, and moderate to severe pulmonary hypertension.
Weighing only 12.2 kg, Michelle is underweight and in a cachexic (wasting) state, fighting each day with the strength of a warrior despite her frail frame. Doctors at The Nairobi West Hospital have strongly recommended urgent cardiac catheterization followed by open-heart surgery to close the VSD and repair her heart valves. Unfortunately, such a specialized procedure is only available abroad—in India.
Michelle’s mother, Schola David, has been making tireless hospital visits, clinging to hope with every consultation. But the high cost of the surgery and travel has left her devastated and helpless.
“I have done everything within my reach, but we are needy and cannot raise the amount required for this operation. My only hope is in the hands of kindhearted Kenyans,” Schola shared tearfully.
The family’s struggles have deepened over time. Michelle’s grandmother, Mama David, has already sold nearly all her possessions in a desperate effort to support her daughter and granddaughter. Even basic needs like food and school fees are now hard to come by.
Despite her suffering, little Michelle continues to smile her strength a beacon of hope to those around her.
