Authorities have urged motorists to seek alternative routes and avoid the Thika Superhighway this Sunday, August 17, as Kenya prepares to host Zambia in a decisive 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) Group A encounter.
In a traffic advisory released by Nairobi County Traffic Commander Joseph Chirchir, several major roads will be temporarily closed as part of broader logistical and security arrangements designed to manage the expected influx of fans and VIPs into the capital.
Among the affected roads are Aerodrome Road (stretching from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout), Lang’ata Road (from Madaraka Roundabout to Lusaka Roundabout) and Mombasa Road (from Lusaka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout). These closures will begin ahead of kick-off and remain in place throughout the fixture.
To ease movement, Chirchir outlined five alternative routes that motorists using Thika Road and its feeder roads can take:
Motorists leaving Nairobi CBD for Thika Road should use Kiambu Road via Exit 4.
Those headed to Mwiki are advised to take the Ruaraka–Baba Dogo–Lucky Summer–Nairobi River route.
Drivers travelling to Nairobi from Thika, Juja or Ruiru should use either the Northern Bypass or Kiambu Road, as a roadblock will be mounted at the Ruiru interchange.
Commuters from Githurai to Nairobi CBD are encouraged to use the Githurai 44–Kiambu Road corridor.
Fans going to Kasarani Stadium with no vehicle entry access will use the Thika Road service lanes at Exit 7 and Exit 8.
In addition, motorists travelling from Mombasa Road into the CBD may use Likoni–Enterprise Road via General Motors or the Southern Bypass at Ole Sereni, while those on Lang’ata Road can access the CBD through Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road from Mbagathi Roundabout.
The temporary measures form part of the government’s efforts to guarantee a smooth and safe hosting of the continental assignment, especially after security was reinforced in the wake of disturbances witnessed during the Kenya-Morocco match earlier in the tournament. That incident prompted the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to issue a Ksh12 million fine to the Football Kenya Federation (FKF).
Harambee Stars will play Zambia in a crucial Group A decider as they aim to cement the top spot and book their place in the knockout phase of the 2024 CHAN competition.
