Principal Secretary for livestock development Jonathan Mueke today conducted a high-level tour of several key national development projects in Kitui County, underscoring the government’s commitment to ensuring speedy delivery of flagship infrastructure ahead of this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations.
Accompanied by senior county officials, PS Mueke inspected the ongoing construction of the Ithookwe Stadium, which has been earmarked as the main venue for the 2025 Mashujaa Day national celebrations. Mueke expressed satisfaction with the progress made so far and urged contractors to continue working around the clock to ensure the stadium is completed on time and to the highest standards.
“Ithookwe Stadium is not just a sports facility; it will serve as a legacy project that will open up new opportunities for talent development and stimulate economic activity in Kitui County,” noted the PS after touring the site.
He thereafter visited the construction site of the Kitui State Lodge, which will host national dignitaries and guests during the Mashujaa Day celebrations. PS Mueke reiterated that the national government is keen on strengthening working relations with county leadership to ensure all logistical arrangements and amenities are in place ahead of the national fete.
In the course of his visit, the PS also inspected ongoing works at the Kitui Affordable Housing Project. He lauded the initiative as a major milestone in the government’s efforts to provide dignified and accessible homes for ordinary Kenyans in line with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
“Affordable housing projects across the country are creating jobs for the youth and improving living standards. The Kitui project is a clear example of how national development priorities are being actualized on the ground,” Mueke said.
The tour concluded with a stop at the Umaa Dam, where PS Mueke assessed the progress of construction works aimed at boosting water supply for domestic use and irrigation in the region. He emphasized the importance of completing the dam, as it will go a long way in addressing persistent water scarcity challenges facing Kitui residents.
The PS reassured residents that the government is committed to expediting the completion of these projects, saying they are vital not just for the upcoming Mashujaa Day celebrations, but for the sustainable development of Kitui County.
Local leaders welcomed the tour and applauded the national government’s focus on fast-tracking development projects in the region, noting that such investments will have long-term social and economic benefits for the county.
