Tension flared on Thursday when former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s entourage came under attack along Mombasa Road, sparking moments of chaos and confusion.
According to eyewitnesses, a group of unidentified youths emerged near City Cabanas and began pelting stones at Gachagua’s motorcade. The attackers, who appeared determined to disrupt the procession, attempted to block the caravan as it made its way to Kamkunji Grounds where Gachagua was scheduled to address supporters.
The sudden assault forced security officers attached to the former DP to intervene swiftly, dispersing the rowdy crowd to clear the way. Motorists along the busy highway were caught up in the commotion, leading to temporary traffic snarl-ups.
Although the extent of damage to vehicles within the convoy was yet to be fully established, sources indicated that several windscreens were shattered during the fracas. No serious injuries had been reported by the time of going to press.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, though observers suggest it could be politically instigated, given the charged atmosphere surrounding Gachagua’s planned rally at Kamkunji.
Police have since been deployed in the area to restore calm and maintain order as investigations into the incident continue.
