Shockwaves in Ukambani as Johnson Muthama Hints at Supporting Kalonzo Musyoka for 2027 Presidency

Kenya’s political landscape was rattled this weekend after former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama Nduya hinted that he could support Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka for the presidency in 2027  a move that would mark a dramatic political turnaround.

Muthama, who now serves as a Commissioner in the Parliamentary Service Commission under President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza government, declared that if the opposition crowns Kalonzo as its flagbearer, he would have no hesitation throwing his weight behind him.

“If the opposition settles on Kalonzo Musyoka as their presidential candidate in 2027, I will have no problem supporting him. He has the experience, the track record, and the leadership qualities this country needs at this time,” Muthama affirmed.

From Ally to Adversary – and Back Again?

The announcement stunned many given Muthama’s history with Kalonzo. For decades, Muthama was regarded as Kalonzo’s chief strategist and financier, championing the Wiper leader across Ukambani. But in the run-up to the 2022 elections, their alliance collapsed after Kalonzo chose to back Raila Odinga under Azimio la Umoja, sidelining Muthama in the process.

Feeling betrayed, Muthama defected to Kenya Kwanza, where he became one of President Ruto’s most visible Ukambani campaigners. His reward was a prestigious appointment to the Parliamentary Service Commission, sealing his place in the government camp.

Now, his unexpected olive branch to Kalonzo has reignited speculation about a possible political reconciliation that could shake up Ukambani and national politics.

Analysts: A Game-Changer for 2027

Political analysts say Muthama’s influence on the ground could significantly boost Kalonzo if he clinches the opposition ticket. With Ukambani often seen as a battleground region, a Muthama–Kalonzo reunion could galvanize the Wiper base and tilt the scales in national politics.

“This is not just a personal decision; it’s a signal. If Muthama crosses back to Kalonzo, it could trigger a domino effect in Ukambani politics ahead of 2027,” said one political observer.

Ruto Camp on Edge

The remarks are also likely to raise eyebrows within President Ruto’s inner circle. Muthama has been a vocal defender of Kenya Kwanza, and his latest comments may be read as a warning shot of shifting loyalties should political realities change.

With President Ruto widely expected to seek re-election, Kalonzo Musyoka positioning himself for a fifth presidential bid, and the opposition yet to formally pick its flagbearer, Muthama’s comments have injected fresh uncertainty into the political chessboard.

What Next?

As the 2027 race slowly takes shape, one thing is clear: Johnson Muthama’s political moves will be closely watched. His words may just have set the stage for one of the most dramatic realignments in Ukambani’s recent history.
