Governor Mutula Champions Accreditation of SEKU-Wote Campus

Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr has thrown his full weight behind efforts to have South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) Wote Campus accredited as a fully-fledged university, describing the move as a game-changer for higher education, research, and innovation in the region.

The Governor made the remarks in his Wote office during a meeting with SEKU Vice Chancellor Prof. Douglas Shitanda and officials from the Commission for University Education (CUE), who are in the county to assess the campus’s readiness for accreditation.

Governor Mutula said the elevation of SEKU-Wote would not only enhance academic excellence but also open new frontiers for research and innovation in agriculture, healthcare, and economic development  sectors he emphasized are central to Makueni’s transformation agenda.

“Accreditation of SEKU-Wote is not just about education. It is about positioning Makueni as a hub of innovation, equipping our youth with the skills to solve local challenges, and ensuring the county plays a leading role in Kenya’s knowledge economy,” Governor Mutula said.

The Governor pledged his administration’s support in providing the necessary environment to fast-track the accreditation process, including strengthening partnerships with academia and industry players. He affirmed that a strong university presence in Wote would boost not only education but also the local economy through expanded opportunities for students, faculty, and the community.

Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili, who also attended the meeting, underscored the county government’s commitment to collaborate with SEKU in driving innovation-led growth.

On its part, the Commission for University Education assured that the ongoing evaluation would be thorough, focusing on facilities, academic programs, and overall institutional capacity before granting the much-anticipated approval.

Governor Mutula’s backing comes at a critical moment for SEKU-Wote, as stakeholders push to secure a permanent place for the institution in Kenya’s higher education landscape. For Makueni, accreditation promises to unlock a future where research and knowledge fuel sustainable growth.
