The Machakos County Assembly is on the brink of a major political showdown after Majority Leader Nicholas Nzioka re-introduced a hard-hitting impeachment motion against embattled Speaker Ann Kiusya. The renewed push has sent shockwaves through the House, with MCAs vowing that this time, the Speaker “must go home.”
The motion, which had earlier garnered the signatures of 33 members on March 19, 2025, is back on track following a court ruling that lifted stay orders previously secured by Speaker Kiusya to halt the process.
Speaking to the press shortly after filing the motion, Machakos Central MCA and Majority Leader Nicholas Nzioka confirmed that the impeachment has already been placed on the House Business Committee’s order paper, awaiting deliberation.
“The court has given us the leeway to either proceed or drop the impeachment. As the mover of the motion, I intend to proceed because we have every reason to do so. Natural justice dictates that you cannot chair or influence a process in which you are the subject of investigation,” Nzioka said firmly.
He demanded that the Speaker step aside to allow a fair hearing, adding:
“If the Assembly clears you, you stay. If not, you go home. But you cannot hold the County Assembly hostage while facing grave accusations.”
Allegations of Misconduct
Nzioka accused Speaker Kiusya of sabotaging the operations of the Assembly and working closely with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to divide the House along political lines, undermining service delivery in Machakos.
In addition, the Majority Leader cited gross misuse of public funds, pointing to a controversial trip to London where the Speaker allegedly traveled with individuals who were not Assembly members, burning through Ksh1.6 million in taxpayers’ money.
The Auditor General has since flagged the questionable expenditure, recommending that Kiusya be surcharged and held personally accountable.
“The Auditor General has confirmed our worst fears. This is why I am fully satisfied with this motion. The only reasonable disciplinary action is for us, as MCAs, to send her home once and for all,” Nzioka stressed.
United Resolve by MCAs
MCAs allied to the Majority Leader, largely from the Wiper Democratic Movement, have vowed to stand their ground and push the impeachment through. They accused Speaker Kiusya of repeatedly frustrating the work of the Assembly, reducing it into a battlefield of political loyalties instead of a platform for oversight and development.
“The era of jokes is over. We are determined. The dubious Speaker must pack her bags and go work with UDA if that is where her loyalty lies,” one MCA declared.
Acting Speaker Stephen Nzue Mwanthi of Ekalakala Ward is set to preside over the House as the impeachment motion is re-tabled, raising expectations of a stormy session that could mark a defining moment in the county’s political history.
Fireworks Expected
The motion has already polarized the Assembly, with allies of Speaker Kiusya expected to put up a fierce defense. However, the Majority Leader and his team insist that the numbers are solidly behind them and that the impeachment is unstoppable.
If successful, the move would send Speaker Ann Kiusya packing, ending her turbulent reign that has been marred by controversy, allegations of corruption, and political betrayal.
As the Assembly braces for the heated session, Machakos residents and political observers are watching keenly to see whether MCAs will finally deliver the Speaker’s day of reckoning or whether the embattled Speaker will once again survive the storm.
