Governor Wavinya Ndeti Leads Machakos in Strategic Push for Food Security Amid Changing Climate

The County Government of Machakos has intensified efforts to safeguard food security and protect livelihoods following a high-level County Steering Committee (CSG) meeting convened to review the draft report of a rapid food and nutrition assessment conducted across the county.

The crucial meeting, held in partnership with the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) and other stakeholders, was spearheaded under the leadership of H.E. Governor Wavinya Ndeti, whose administration continues to prioritize household food security as a cornerstone of sustainable development.

The committee undertook a comprehensive review of the prevailing food security and nutrition situation in Machakos, carefully analyzing the findings of the assessment against the backdrop of current climatic and weather patterns affecting the region. With erratic rainfall and shifting climate conditions posing a persistent threat to agricultural productivity and livelihoods, the review session underscored the urgency of coordinated, evidence-based interventions.

The rapid food and nutrition assessment serves as a vital decision-making tool, enabling the county to design timely and targeted responses to emerging vulnerabilities. It provides a clear picture of household food access, nutritional status and the resilience of communities, ensuring that no resident is left behind.

Governor Wavinya Ndeti has consistently championed practical and people-centered solutions to food insecurity. Her clarion call, “Chakula Mezani, Pesa Mfukoni,” remains a guiding principle for her administration a bold commitment to ensuring that families across Machakos have food on their tables and income in their pockets.

Under her stewardship, the county has continued to strengthen partnerships with national agencies such as NDMA and development stakeholders to enhance early warning systems, improve drought preparedness, and implement sustainable agricultural and livelihood programs. The review of the assessment report marks another strategic step toward building resilient communities capable of withstanding climate-related shocks.

Speaking during the session, county officials emphasized the importance of collaboration and data-driven planning in mitigating the effects of drought and food shortages. The meeting reaffirmed the county’s resolve to translate assessment findings into actionable interventions that will directly benefit residents at the grassroots level.

Among those in attendance were Hon. Rita Ndunge, CECM for Youth and Sports; Hon. Annastacia Munyaka, CECM for Devolution; and Mr. Moses Wambua, Chief Officer for Livestock and Fisheries Development. Also present were NDMA officials, directors from various county departments, and other key stakeholders committed to a coordinated approach in addressing food security challenges.

The meeting signals Machakos County’s proactive stance in confronting emerging food and nutrition concerns. With Governor Wavinya Ndeti at the helm, the county remains firmly focused on strengthening resilience, protecting livelihoods, and securing a sustainable, food-secure future for all its residents.
