Governor Wavinya Ndeti Cuts Property Rates to Ease Burden on Landowners Amid Tough Economic Times

Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has announced a major reduction in property rates, describing the move as a bold intervention aimed at easing the financial burden on landowners while ensuring fairness in revenue collection.

Speaking on the county’s revised land valuation and rates framework, Governor Ndeti said her administration had reduced the property rates charge from 2 percent to 0.5 percent in response to the high site value of land and the difficult economic conditions facing residents.

“We have reduced our rates track from 2 percent to 0.5 percent because of the high site value of the land, in order to cushion property owners in the prevailing hard economic times,” she said.

The governor said the decision reflects her administration’s commitment to balancing county revenue needs with the welfare of residents. She noted that while the county must raise sufficient resources to fund development, it also has a duty to protect wananchi from excessive financial strain.

Governor Ndeti emphasized that the reduction was part of a people-centered approach to governance that prioritizes fairness, affordability, and economic relief. She said the revised rates would make compliance easier for landowners while still enabling the county to collect funds needed for critical services.

According to the governor, revenue generated through the new system will continue to support essential devolved functions such as healthcare, road infrastructure, water services, and urban development projects across Machakos County.

She assured residents that her government remains committed to transparent and consultative leadership, adding that the rate reduction demonstrates her administration’s willingness to listen to public concerns and act in the best interests of the people.

Governor Ndeti said the move was a clear indication that her leadership is focused on delivering development without placing unnecessary pressure on hardworking residents during challenging economic times.
