Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe today officially commissioned the 150-metre Thua Drift along the Kiangini–Thua River–Kyukuni road in Voo/Kyamatu Ward, marking another major milestone in the county’s efforts to improve infrastructure and enhance connectivity in rural areas.
The newly completed drift, which is already open to the public and serving residents, is expected to significantly ease movement across the area by providing a reliable crossing point over the Thua River. For years, residents faced transport challenges, especially during rainy seasons when the river became impassable, disrupting access to markets, schools, health facilities, and other essential services.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Governor Malombe reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering transformative infrastructure projects that directly improve the lives of wananchi. He noted that the project demonstrates the county government’s continued focus on opening up remote areas, stimulating local economic growth, and ensuring residents have access to quality transport networks.
The Governor emphasized that improved road connectivity remains a key pillar of his development agenda, adding that strategic investments in infrastructure are crucial for boosting trade, enhancing service delivery, and creating opportunities for communities across Kitui County.
Residents welcomed the completion of the project, describing it as a long-awaited intervention that will reduce travel challenges and improve accessibility throughout the region.
The commissioning event was attended by Deputy Governor Augustine Kanani, Voo/Kyamatu MCA Hon. Zack Syengo, Chuluni MCA Hon. Mathew Vuthi, members of the County Executive, and local leaders who joined Governor Malombe in celebrating the achievement.
The Thua Drift project is part of the county government’s broader infrastructure development programme aimed at strengthening transport networks and accelerating socio-economic development across Kitui County.
