Seven Human Remains Transferred to City Mortuary as Investigations into Mwingi Discoveries Intensify

The seven human remains recovered from different locations within Mwingi Township over the past six weeks have been transferred to the City Mortuary in Nairobi for advanced forensic examinations as investigations into the shocking discoveries continue.

Speaking through a press statement issued on Thursday, Kitui Governor Julius Malombe said the County Government is working closely with security agencies and other relevant government institutions to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and ensure justice is served.

The latest discovery was made on June 8, 2026, after authorities received information about suspected human remains buried in shallow graves opposite Mwingi Catholic Church near the Mwingi-Garissa Highway. A multi-agency team comprising health officials, police officers and administrators visited the site under court authority and recovered four human remains from four shallow graves.n

Governor Malombe noted that the identities of the deceased, their ages and causes of death have not yet been established and remain under active investigation.

The latest recovery follows earlier incidents in the same area. On April 28, an unidentified adult male was found dead in Kanginga area, while on May 25, authorities recovered two more human remains comprising the body of a man and a severed female head whose body is yet to be found.

To strengthen investigations and facilitate identification of the victims, all seven bodies have now been moved from Mwingi Level IV Hospital Mortuary to Nairobi’s City Mortuary, where detailed post-mortem and forensic examinations will be conducted.

Governor Malombe assured residents that their safety and security remain a top priority and urged members of the public to remain calm, avoid speculation and provide any useful information to investigators through the nearest police station or administrative office.

He also conveyed his sympathies to families who may ultimately be affected by the tragic discoveries, reaffirming the county government’s commitment to supporting efforts aimed at uncovering the truth and ensuring accountability.
