Malombe Vows Justice as Seven Human Remains Recovered in Mwingi

Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe has assured residents that the County Government is working closely with security agencies and other government institutions to establish the circumstances surrounding the discovery of human remains in Mwingi Township and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

Speaking through a press statement issued on Thursday, Dr. Malombe expressed deep concern over the incidents, which have caused anxiety among residents of Mwingi, Kitui County, and the country at large.

The governor revealed that the latest discovery was made on June 8, 2026, after authorities received information about suspected human remains buried in shallow graves opposite Mwingi Catholic Church near the Mwingi–Garissa Highway.

A multi-agency team comprising officers from the County Ministry of Health, the National Police Service and other government agencies visited the site under court authority and confirmed the existence of four shallow graves containing human remains believed to belong to unknown persons.

Dr. Malombe said the identities of the deceased, their ages and the causes of death have not yet been established and remain under active investigation.

The latest recovery follows previous discoveries in the area. On April 28, an unidentified adult male body was found in Kanginga, Mwingi Township. On May 25, two more human remains were recovered from the same locality, including the body of a male and a severed female head whose remaining body parts have not yet been traced.

The governor noted that the latest findings bring the total number of human remains recovered within the broader Mwingi Township area over the past six weeks to seven.

Following the latest discovery, security agencies secured the scene and the remains were exhumed, documented and taken to Mwingi Level IV Hospital Mortuary pending post-mortem examinations.

To strengthen investigations and facilitate identification, Dr. Malombe announced that all seven recovered bodies will be transferred to Nairobi’s City Mortuary for detailed forensic analysis and post-mortem examinations.

He reassured residents that their safety and security remain a top priority and urged the public to remain calm, avoid speculation and refrain from spreading unverified information that could interfere with ongoing investigations.

The governor also called upon anyone with information that could assist investigators to report it to the nearest police station or administrative office.

Dr. Malombe extended his sympathies to families that may ultimately be affected by the tragic discoveries and pledged that the County Government will continue updating the public as investigations progress.
