Kitui County is set to make history as it hosts this year’s national Mashujaa Day celebrations, following the official handover of Ithookwe Stadium to the National Celebrations Committee earlier today.
The ceremony, graced by Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe and the Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, Hon. Salim Mvurya, marked a major milestone in the county’s preparations for the much-anticipated event scheduled for October 20th, 2025.
Speaking during the event, Governor Malombe expressed profound gratitude to President William Ruto for granting Kitui the rare honor of hosting the national celebrations, describing it as a moment of pride not only for the county but for the entire Lower Eastern region.
“We thank His Excellency the President for choosing Kitui to host this year’s Mashujaa Day. The Ithookwe Stadium is ready, and we invite all Kenyans to join us in celebrating the heroes and heroines who have shaped our nation’s destiny,” said Dr. Malombe.

The handover was officially received on behalf of the National Celebrations Committee by Duncan Makori, the Secretary Administration in the Ministry of Interior and National Administration.
CS Mvurya, who inspected the facility, lauded the teamwork between the national and county governments, noting that the contractor was finalizing the last touches to ensure the stadium meets all national standards.
“All systems are set for the celebrations. The collaboration between the two levels of government has been exemplary, and we are confident that Kitui will host one of the most memorable Mashujaa Day events in history,” Mvurya affirmed.
The stadium, now a symbol of unity and transformation, has been undergoing rapid modernization in readiness for the national event, which is expected to attract thousands of visitors, dignitaries, and local residents.
The Mashujaa Day celebrations held annually to honor Kenya’s freedom fighters and modern-day heroes will mark a defining moment for Kitui, placing the county firmly on the national
stage.
