Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection, Dr. Alfred Mutua, is facing mounting pressure after the Senate officially summoned him to respond to serious allegations surrounding the controversial “Kazi Majuu” program a flagship initiative that was intended to provide overseas job opportunities for thousands of Kenyan youth.
The program, which was launched with pomp and promise, has now crumbled under the weight of scandal. Dubbed by critics as a “scam baptised as opportunity,” Kazi Majuu was meant to connect unemployed Kenyans with jobs in countries such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Germany. However, investigations and public outcry have revealed that while millions of shillings were collected from hopeful applicants for processing and placement fees, very few — if any actually secured jobs abroad.
According to sources within the Senate Labour Committee, numerous complaints have been filed by youths who say they paid between KSh 40,000 to KSh 150,000 each but never received any job placements or even official communication after making their payments.
As the scandal unfolds, all eyes are now on CS Mutua, who has maintained a low profile amid the growing uproar. His ministry is accused not only of mismanagement but also of potentially enabling fraud, as some of the recruitment agencies involved were reportedly operating without valid licenses.
On Tuesday, the Senate directed Dr. Mutua to appear before its committee next week to answer critical questions, including how the funds were handled, who approved the agencies involved, and why no action was taken after early warning signs.
Political analysts say this development marks a significant blow to the once-vibrant image of Dr. Mutua, known for his flamboyant projects and high-energy PR. “This is no longer about optics it’s about accountability,” said political commentator Mark Biko. “If he fails to convince the Senate, the consequences could be severe.”
Kenyans online have taken to social media, demanding justice for the affected youth and calling for refunds and prosecutions. The hashtag #KaziMajuuScam has been trending nationwide, with users sharing stories of lost savings, broken dreams, and dashed hopes.
