Caritas Official Calls for Donkey Protection Ahead of Rabies Day in Kitui

Abrose Musyimi, Project Lead at Caritas Kitui, has urged the government to intensify efforts to protect donkeys and safeguard consumers from unsafe meat.

Speaking in Kitui Town ahead of Rabies Day, which will be observed tomorrow at Musila Gardens in Mwingi in collaboration with the Kitui County Government and Caritas, Musyimi voiced concern over the increasing cases of donkey theft and illegal slaughter.

His remarks came in the wake of the arrest of two suspects at Kanyoonyoo, Kitui County, who were intercepted while transporting 28 donkeys illegally. The suspects were arraigned before Senior Principal Magistrate Kyalo at the Kitui Law Courts and later released on a cash bail of KSh 10,000 each.

Musyimi underlined the importance of donkeys as a vital source of livelihood for many households in Kitui, stressing the need for urgent intervention. He appealed to the authorities to strengthen enforcement measures to curb illegal trade and to guarantee the safety of meat consumed by residents.

“Donkeys are not merely beasts of burden; they form part of the social and economic fabric of our communities. Protecting them is synonymous with protecting the dignity and livelihoods of our people,” Musyimi said.
