The Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, Hon. Opiyo Wandayi, on Wednesday toured Kitui County to assess the preparedness of energy agencies under his ministry ahead of the upcoming Energy Week and Mashujaa Day celebrations, both set to be hosted in Kitui next week.
Speaking to members of the press after the inspection tour, CS Wandayi said the visit aimed to ensure that all State Agencies and Semi-Autonomous Government Agencies (SAGAs) under the ministry are adequately prepared to showcase their progress and contributions toward Kenya’s energy transformation agenda.
“As a precursor to marking both the Energy Week and Mashujaa Day scheduled for Kitui County next week, I today conducted an elaborate inspection of the degree of preparedness by the various SAGAs under the Ministry towards the events, as well as toured the exhibition and CSR activities by the agencies in the County,” Wandayi said.
The Energy Week, he noted, serves as a critical platform to raise awareness and inspire collective action toward achieving sustainable, inclusive, and modern energy access for every Kenyan.
“Our main objective of the Energy Week is to raise awareness and drive actions toward sustainable, inclusive, and modern energy access for all Kenyans,” the CS emphasized.
During the tour, the Cabinet Secretary interacted with representatives from key energy sector agencies who showcased ongoing and completed projects within Kitui County. These include rural electrification initiatives, clean cooking energy solutions, and renewable energy programs targeting households and institutions.
Wandayi commended the progress made in enhancing energy access across Kitui and the Lower Eastern region, affirming that the government remains committed to ensuring equitable energy distribution as part of the country’s Vision 2030 and Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
He further lauded the collaboration between the national and county governments, noting that Kitui’s hosting of the national events reflects its growing role in Kenya’s energy and development landscape.
The CS encouraged residents to take part in the upcoming Energy Week exhibitions, which will feature innovations, community empowerment programs, and demonstrations of affordable energy technologies aimed at improving livelihoods.
“Energy is a key enabler of development,” Wandayi said, “and our mission is to ensure that no Kenyan is left behind in accessing clean, reliable, and affordable power.”
The Energy Week activities will culminate in the Mashujaa Day celebrations, where national and county leaders are expected to showcase the transformative milestones achieved in the energy sector and other key areas of national development.
