Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming Mombasa County into a modern, globally competitive economic hub through an ambitious infrastructure and blue economy agenda.
Speaking in Nyali, Mombasa County, during a resource mobilization event for small businesses hosted by Woman Representative Hon. Zamzam Mohammed, the Deputy President outlined several ongoing and upcoming development projects that he said will revolutionize transport, housing, trade, and fisheries in the region.
Prof. Kindiki said the dualing of the Nyali–Mtwapa–Kilifi Road, the Changamwe–Jomvu–Mazeras–Mariakani Highway, and the completion of the Dongo Kundu By-Pass are among the flagship infrastructure projects that will ease transportation and boost trade across the coastal corridor.
“These projects will not only enhance the movement of goods and people but also strengthen Mombasa’s position as the gateway to Kenya and the region,” said the Deputy President.
He also pointed to ongoing blue economy initiatives, including the KSh 78 million Likoni Fish Market and the KSh 175 million Kidongo Fish Landing Site, which are nearing completion. Prof. Kindiki noted that these projects are key to creating sustainable livelihoods and empowering local fishing communities.
The Deputy President further announced that the KSh 6 billion Nyali Affordable Housing Project, along with new modern markets in Jomvu, Sega, and Changamwe, will provide decent business spaces for micro and small enterprise owners, improving the city’s trading environment and creating thousands of jobs.
On the maritime front, Prof. Kindiki revealed that the KSh 41 billion Mombasa Port Expansion and Modernization Project is set to commence within the next two to three months, describing it as a game-changer that will increase port efficiency and boost Kenya’s competitiveness in global trade.
In his remarks, the Deputy President lauded the County Government of Mombasa and its residents for leading nationally in the registration of Taifa Care, the Universal Health Insurance Program. “With nearly 900,000 out of 1.1 million residents enrolled—representing 75% of the population—Mombasa stands as the top county both in percentage and absolute numbers,” he said.
The event was attended by several national and regional leaders, including Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir, National Assembly Chief Whip Sylvanus Osoro (South Mugirango MP), Rashid Bedzimba (Kisauni MP), Kassim Tandaza (Matuga MP), Danson Mungatana (Senator, Tana River), Fatuma Masito (Woman Rep, Kwale), Captain Ruweida Obbo (Lamu East MP), Paul Katana (Kaloleni MP), Oscar Sudi (Kapseret MP), Ken Aramat (Narok East MP), Caleb Mule (Machakos Town MP), and several Members of the Mombasa County Assembly.
Prof. Kindiki emphasized that the government remains committed to ensuring that every part of Kenya, including Mombasa, benefits from equitable development and economic empowerment initiatives.
“Our vision is to make Mombasa a model of urban transformation where infrastructure, enterprise, and human dignity grow hand in hand,” he concluded.
