Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki has announced a major infrastructural and economic transformation for Tharaka Nithi County, with the government finalizing plans for the long-awaited KSh 8 billion Nithi Bridge project.
Speaking on Saturday during a resource mobilization event for micro and small businesses and SACCOs in Maara Constituency, the Deputy President confirmed that the contracting process for the Nithi Bridge is at the tail end, paving the way for construction to begin soon.
“The contracting for the construction of a new eight-billion-shilling Nithi Bridge is at the tail end, and soon the project should begin,” said Prof. Kindiki, assuring residents that the government remains steadfast in delivering on its infrastructure promises.
In a major boost for connectivity and trade within the region, Kindiki also announced that works have resumed on two key roads in Maara Constituency that had stalled since 2018 — the 23-kilometer Chogoria–Mutindwa–Weru Road and the 30-kilometer Keeria–Magutuni–Kathwana Road. The completion of these roads is expected to significantly ease movement, promote local commerce, and enhance access to social amenities across Tharaka Nithi.
Further demonstrating the government’s commitment to uplifting local livelihoods, Prof. Kindiki revealed that Chogoria Market is nearing completion at a cost of KSh 66 million, with new modern markets set to be constructed in Magutuni and Mwanga Rimwe.
In the energy sector, the Deputy President announced a major increase in the electricity connectivity allocation for Tharaka Nithi County — from KSh 400 million to KSh 1.2 billion — aimed at expanding power access to rural households and spurring local industries.
“Our goal is to ensure that every home, school, and business in Tharaka Nithi has access to reliable electricity. This will boost productivity and support the county’s economic growth,” Prof. Kindiki said.
During the event, which brought together grassroots business groups and cooperatives, the Deputy President helped raise financial resources and presented equipment including posho mills, welding machines, car wash machines, and other tools to empower small-scale entrepreneurs.
The event was graced by several national and county leaders including National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah (MP Kikuyu), Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro (MP South Mugirango), Maara MP Kareke Mbiuki, Tharaka MP Gitonga Murugara, Chuka Igamba Ng’ombe MP Patrick Munene, Woman Representative Susan Ngugi, Deputy Governor Nyaga Muisiraeli, Former Governor Samuel Ragwa, MCAs, and local leaders.
Prof. Kindiki lauded the unity and collaboration among leaders in Tharaka Nithi, emphasizing that the region is now well-positioned for rapid growth under the Kenya Kwanza administration.
“The government of President William Ruto is committed to ensuring equitable development in every corner of this country. Tharaka Nithi will not be left behind,” he affirmed.
The Deputy President’s visit and development pledges have reignited optimism among residents, who view the projects as a long-awaited lifeline to unlock Tharaka Nithi’s economic potential and improve the quality of life for thousands of families across the county.
