Dr Irene Kasalu has called on Kenyan families with the capacity and goodwill to embrace child adoption and foster care as a way of giving vulnerable children an opportunity to grow up in stable, loving and supportive homes.
Speaking during a visit to AIC Kitui Baby Home, the Woman Representative emphasized that children deserve to grow up in family environments where they can enjoy parental love, emotional support and proper guidance, noting that such settings are more beneficial to their growth and development compared to prolonged institutional care.
Dr Kasalu urged capable families across the country to step forward and support children in need through adoption and foster care programs, saying this would not only transform lives but also help ease congestion in children’s homes.
She noted that a family setup plays a critical role in shaping the emotional, social and psychological wellbeing of a child, adding that every child deserves the warmth, care and sense of belonging that comes with being part of a family.
“Children thrive best in loving family environments where they are nurtured, guided and protected. I encourage families that are able to consider adoption so that vulnerable children can have a brighter and more secure future,” said Dr Kasalu.
During the visit, the legislator donated food supplies, diapers, tissues and other essential items to support the children and caregivers at the institution. She commended the management and staff of the home for their dedication and commitment to providing care, protection and hope to children facing difficult circumstances.
Dr Kasalu further aligned her remarks with the government’s ongoing push to promote family-based care for children, instead of allowing them to remain in institutions for long periods. She observed that integrating children into responsible family settings helps create a safer and healthier environment for their upbringing.
At the same time, she raised concern over reports that some rogue operators have previously exploited children’s homes for illegal activities, including child trafficking and exploitation. The Woman Representative called for stricter oversight, stronger child protection systems and transparent adoption procedures to safeguard the rights and welfare of vulnerable children.
Her remarks come at a time when the country is increasingly shifting focus towards family-centered care models aimed at ensuring every child grows up in a safe, caring and dignified environment.
