Drama at Kitui County Assembly as Matinyani MCA Jumps Over Gate After Being Denied Access

Kitui County Assembly on Wednesday turned to fracas zone after Matinyani Ward MCA, Silvester Munyalo Kitheka, popularly known as Yaamu, was forcibly removed from the assembly chambers and later denied entry by police officers acting on orders from Speaker Kinengo Katisya.

The chaos erupted when Speaker Kinengo directed the Sergeant-at-Arms to eject Yaamu from the chambers, citing what he termed as “disruptive behavior.” However, in the ensuing scuffle, the sergeant-at-arms reportedly lost his teeth, intensifying the already tense atmosphere.

Yaamu, who was elected under the NARC party ticket, was later blocked from re-entering the assembly premises, along with two other MCAs. In a defiant move, he was forced to jump over the assembly gate in an attempt to reclaim his seat.

House Leadership Wrangles

The altercation stemmed from Speaker Kinengo’s refusal to make an official communication regarding changes in the county assembly leadership on the majority side. The house lacked quorum, further delaying critical decisions. Sources indicate that a faction within the assembly is pushing for a shake-up in leadership, but Speaker Kinengo appears determined to stall the process.

Supporters of Yaamu and his colleagues have condemned the incident, accusing the Speaker of undermining democracy and using police officers to intimidate elected leaders.

“This is an abuse of power. The people of Matinyani elected me, and I have the right to represent them in the assembly,” said an enraged Yaamu after the incident.

Meanwhile, calls for an urgent resolution to the leadership wrangles in the Kitui County Assembly continue to mount, with political observers warning that the crisis could further cripple county operations.

For now, Kitui residents can only watch as their elected leaders engage in dramatic political battles—some even leaping over gates to fight for their positions.
