Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to transforming Kenya’s economy through agricultural revitalization, infrastructure development, affordable housing, electrification, and enhanced social services, with Tana River County among the key beneficiaries.
Speaking during a meeting with 300 elders representing different communities in Tana River County, Prof. Kindiki said the administration is rolling out projects aimed at boosting livelihoods, creating jobs, and ensuring food security, particularly for young people.
In agriculture, the Government has injected KSh 1.5 billion into the rehabilitation of the Bura Irrigation Scheme, a flagship project expected to enhance rice production, uplift local farmers, and strengthen food security nationally.
To support trade and income generation, the Deputy President announced that six fresh produce markets, worth KSh 260 million, are under construction across the county. Additionally, Tana River has been allocated KSh 15 billion for affordable housing projects and KSh 2 billion for student accommodation facilities across Technical Training Institutes (TTIs), interventions he said are creating jobs while addressing housing challenges.
On healthcare, Prof. Kindiki revealed that 100,000 residents of Tana River — out of a population of 315,000 — are now enrolled in Taifa Care, Kenya’s Universal Health Insurance Programme, ensuring more families access affordable medical services.
Electrification efforts are also ongoing, with Last Mile Connectivity projects valued at KSh 432 million set to connect 2,700 households in Bura, Galole, and Garsen constituencies.
Prof. Kindiki urged the elders to continue offering moral and cultural guidance while fostering peace and unity among the diverse communities of Tana River County.
“The Government is determined to uplift every part of the country. By improving agriculture, building markets, expanding electricity access, and investing in housing, we are laying a strong foundation for shared prosperity. We also count on the wisdom of our elders to ensure harmony and peaceful coexistence in Tana River and beyond,” he said.
The meeting was attended by Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana, Woman Representative Amina Dika, MPs Said Buya Hiribae (Galole), Kuno Yakub Adow (Bura), Ali Wario (Garsen), and County Assembly Speaker Osman Galole. Also present were Principal Secretary for Cabinet Affairs Dr. Idris Salim Dokota and National Police Service Commission Chairman Dr. Amani Komora.
