The national Energy Week commenced today at Ithookwe Primary School in Kitui County, setting the stage for this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations, which will be held under the theme “Energy for National Transformation.”
The event was graced by the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Petroleum, Mohamed Liban, CBS, who led hundreds of residents, students, and government officials in a tree planting exercise aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and clean energy awareness.
In his remarks, PS Liban emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering sustainable development through energy-efficient and eco-friendly initiatives. He noted that activities under the Energy Week are designed to educate the public on the importance of renewable energy, water security, and environmental conservation all key pillars in Kenya’s Vision 2030 agenda.
“Our government is working to ensure that every Kenyan, especially in learning institutions, has access to clean energy and reliable water supply. These projects not only improve livelihoods but also strengthen our resilience to climate change,” said Liban.
Earlier in the day, PS Liban commissioned modern borehole equipment at Kitui Teachers Training College (KTTC), a crucial project expected to provide a sustainable water source for the institution and nearby communities. The installation utilizes energy-efficient pumping systems powered by renewable energy, in line with the government’s strategy to expand green energy solutions across the country.
Liban, who was accompanied by ICT and Digital Strategist Denis Itumbi and several senior government officials, commended the collaboration between the national and county governments in delivering high-impact projects in Kitui. He lauded local contractors for completing the borehole project within schedule, noting that such partnerships are vital in driving Kenya’s development agenda.
Energy Week activities will continue throughout the week across various institutions in Kitui, featuring exhibitions, public sensitization forums, and school outreach programs. The events are a prelude to the Mashujaa Day celebrations, where the energy sector will take center stage in showcasing how innovation and sustainability are powering Kenya’s growth story.
