Former Cabinet Secretary for,EAC, arid and semi-arid lands and regional development in Kenya Peninah Malonza, has distributed 48 water tanks of 2,500 litres each and 120 handwashing tanks of 25 litres to residents of Zombe in Kitui East Sub-county as part of her continued efforts to empower local communities through water conservation and youth empowerment initiatives.
Speaking during the distribution exercise, Malonza emphasized the importance of water harvesting as the region continues to experience erratic rainfall patterns. She urged the beneficiaries to make good use of the tanks by harvesting rainwater and preparing their farms early ahead of the upcoming planting season.
“This is the right time for our people to prepare. Let us take advantage of every drop of rain to secure water for domestic use and for our farms. Water harvesting is key to transforming our livelihoods,” Malonza said.
The former CS also used the occasion to encourage youth aged between 18 and 29 years across Kitui County to seize the opportunity presented by the Nyota Program, a government initiative designed to uplift young people through financial empowerment.
She explained that through the Nyota Program, successful applicants would receive a non-refundable grant of Ksh 50,000, which would help them start small businesses or income-generating projects.
“This is a golden opportunity for our young people. The Ksh 50,000 is not a loan it is a grant meant to empower you to start something meaningful for your future. Let us not be left behind,” she added.
Malonza reiterated her commitment to supporting community development initiatives that improve access to water, promote food security, and create economic opportunities for youth and women in Kitui County.
Residents of Zombe praised the former CS for her continued dedication and for championing programs that directly touch the lives of the people, particularly in rural and marginalized areas.
