Yatta/Kwa Vonza Ward in Kitui Rural was abuzz with excitement as former Cabinet Secretary Peninah Malonza spearheaded yet another impactful water empowerment initiative. In the latest phase of her program, Malonza distributed 16 water storage tanks with a capacity of 2,500 litres each alongside 121 handwashing tanks of 25 litres, directly benefiting households and community groups across the ward.
This event marked the third phase of her ongoing water distribution project, which has now seen a total of 476 tanks distributed across Kitui County, underscoring Malonza’s consistent commitment to addressing the persistent challenge of water scarcity in the region.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Malonza emphasized the importance of collective organization, urging women to form and register groups in order to access such empowerment opportunities.
“When women come together in organized groups, it becomes easier to support them with initiatives like these. Water is life, and we must ensure that every household and every village has access to clean and reliable water,” Malonza stated.
Over the years, Malonza has remained vocal and proactive in the fight against water scarcity in Kitui, a region that continues to face the brunt of prolonged dry spells. Her initiative has not only provided families with much-needed relief but has also empowered communities to embrace sustainable water management practices.
Residents of Yatta/Kwa Vonza Ward lauded the gesture, describing it as a timely intervention that will greatly reduce the burden of walking long distances in search of water.
Malonza reaffirmed her dedication to uplifting Kitui communities, promising to scale up the project and reach more households and institutions across the county.
One of the beneficiaries, Christine Vilita Mwendwa, expressed her gratitude for the support, saying the tank will greatly improve her family’s ability to store clean water.
“This is a dream come true. We have been struggling with water storage, but now I can comfortably fetch and preserve water for my household. I am deeply thankful to Madam Malonza for her generosity and concern for our community,” said Christine
Christine went on to urge fellow women to join registered groups or SACCOs so that they can also benefit from such initiatives.
“I want to encourage other women not to remain behind. Let us come together in groups because when we are organized, opportunities like these reach us. Madam Malonza has shown us that when women unite, development follows,” she added.
